Rain-tainted children

Recent conversations with our kids on water:

In California Kaytlin started freaking out: "Holy Cow!! Oh my goodness!!! There's water shooting out of the ground mom!  Look!"
Me: "Oh yeah.  That's a sprinkler Kaytlin, that's how they water the plants around here."
Kaytlin: "What?! Why?"
Me: "Because it doesn't rain every day and they need to put water on their plants."
Kaytlin: "Why don't they just find a clean bucket and put it outside at night time?  Then in the morning it will be full of water and they can water all the plants!"
Me: "It doesn't rain here like at our home, if they put a bucket outside there still wouldn't be any water, even after many days."
Kaytlin: "Whoa!" [Followed by many more questions]

Another day recently we had some sunshine and the kids were saying it was "too bright outside," and that they needed their sunglasses. I've been missing the sun lately and told them there's no such thing as being "too bright" in Ketchikan.

John was telling Kaytlin about how in other places there are a lot of sunny days and they go a long time without rain. 
Her reply: "Then how would they get water for their houses?"
John: "They don't have water tanks like us, they get their water from pipes."
Kaytlin: "What?!"
They had a long conversation about wells and pipes and etc.

We get an average of 13 feet of rain a year and collect all of our water from our roof, which is saved in our water tank behind our house.  It's funny to me that my kids think it's normal.
